Reflection: Noticing What Has Quietly Flourished

As August unfolds, there's something in the air that feels different.

The gardens are abundant, the hedgerows are alive with late summer flowers, and although the warm days are still with us, there's a quiet sense that the seasons are beginning to turn.

Nature doesn't rush.

It simply moves, one gentle season into the next.

This time of year invites us to do the same.

The Wisdom of the First Harvest

On 1st August we celebrate Lammas (or Lughnasadh), the first harvest festival of the Wheel of the Year.

Traditionally, it was a time to gather the first grains, bake fresh bread and give thanks for the abundance of the land. After months of tending crops, people paused to acknowledge the fruits of their labour before the busy harvest season continued.

Although many of us no longer live by the farming calendar, the message of Lammas feels just as relevant today.

It gently asks us to pause.

To notice.

To appreciate what has grown.

Not only in our gardens, but within ourselves.

"Growth Isn't Always Obvious. Sometimes it arrives quietly, one step at a time."

When we think about personal growth, we often imagine dramatic transformations.

But the most meaningful changes are usually much quieter.

Perhaps you've learnt to say no without feeling guilty.

Maybe you've made more time to rest.

Perhaps you've discovered a new hobby, spent more time outdoors, or simply kept putting one foot in front of the other during a difficult season.

These moments matter.

Growth isn't always measured by milestones.

Sometimes it's measured by resilience.

By kindness.

By choosing yourself a little more often than you did before.

Just as a tiny seed slowly becomes a flourishing plant, our own growth happens one small step at a time.

What Has Quietly Flourished?

One of my favourite things about August is that it encourages us to celebrate the progress we might otherwise overlook.

Before you start thinking about everything that's still on your to-do list, take a moment to reflect on what you've already achieved.

Ask yourself:

  • What am I most proud of this year?

  • What challenge have I overcome?

  • What habit has become easier?

  • Where have I shown myself compassion?

  • What has brought me genuine joy?

Sometimes we become so focused on what's next that we forget to celebrate how far we've already come.

Looking to Nature

This month I've been noticing Yarrow everywhere.

It's appeared in hedgerows, along country lanes, in grass verges… and even surprised me by popping up in my own lawn.

It felt like a gentle reminder that nature is always offering quiet lessons, if we're willing to notice them.

Yarrow is often associated with healthy boundaries - remaining open-hearted without absorbing everything around us.

What a beautiful message as we move through the busy days of late summer.

Perhaps the plants growing around us have more to teach us than we realise.

A Gentle Reflection Ritual

You don't need hours of free time to reconnect with yourself.

This week, why not try this simple ritual?

Make yourself a cup of herbal tea.

Take it outside.

Leave your phone indoors.

Sit quietly for just ten minutes.

Notice the warmth of the sun on your skin.

Listen to the birdsong.

Watch the bees moving from flower to flower.

Take a slow breath and ask yourself:

What has quietly flourished in my life this summer?

There is no right or wrong answer.

Simply notice what comes.

As the Season Begins to Turn

Although autumn is still a little way off, August offers us a beautiful pause between the fullness of summer and the quieter months ahead.

It reminds us that before we rush into the next season, we deserve to acknowledge the one we've just lived.

Celebrate your harvest.

Honour your journey.

Trust that every small step you've taken has helped shape who you are becoming.

Because growth isn't always loud.

Sometimes, it's found in the quiet moments when we stop long enough to notice it.

 Journal Prompts

Take a few moments to reflect on these questions:

  • What has quietly flourished in my life this summer?

  • What am I most grateful for today?

  • Where have I grown in ways that others may not even notice?

  • What do I want to continue nurturing as we move towards autumn?

Warm wishes,
